Attleborough Area Guide

Attleborough is large market town situated between Norwich and Thetford on the A11 commuter corridor. It has a long history dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, when the residents put up a brave fight against the invading Danes. It developed as a town during the medieval period. The town’s Griffin Hotel once held prisoners overnight during their summons to the Assizes court in Thetford, creating huge public interest and the founding of the Rogues Fair. This is now the thriving Thursday Charter market, with turkey trading still a speciality in the area.

The train services to and from Attleborough are popular with Norwich and Cambridge commuters, and travellers to Stansted Airport. There are straightforward connections for London commuters, and from Norwich there are regular trains to the North Norfolk coast and the Norfolk Broads.

The town provides education settings from nursery to sixth form, with two primary schools, a secondary academy and sixth form. There are also two new specialist SEN schools in nearby Quidenham. Attleborough is very community-minded and there are plenty of events and activities for everyone to enjoy. The community cinema shows films at the Town Hall, with a programme for all ages. Sports and social groups are very popular and include football, bowling, athletics, boxing, martial arts, snooker, gymnastics, cricket, local heritage and health and fitness.

Local attractions include Banham Zoo and Thetford Forest, and many footpaths and countryside walks offering stunning views. The town centre itself is brimming with independent shops, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants. It’s the perfect base for visits to the coast, being less than an hour’s drive from Great Yarmouth. And if your new garden needs something a little extra, then Peter Beales Roses, famous for its world-class blooms, is just on the edge of town.
